Exuvia (from Wikipedia)
Exuvia (plural: exuviae) is a term used in biology to describe the remains of an exoskeleton that is left after an arthropod (insect, crustacean or arachnid) has moulted. The exuvia of an animal can be important to biologists as it can often be used identify the species of the animal and even its sex.
The imago is the last stage of development of an insect, after the last ecdysis of an incomplete metamorphosis, or after emergence from pupation where the metamorphosis is complete. As this is the only stage which is sexually mature, and has functional wings in winged species, the imago is often referred to as the adult stage.
Dragonflies during the long time they use to live in their larval form – in some cases this state could go on many years - they are exceptional predators of other larvae and insects, we realized about their existences just when - moulting and leaving their old nature - they live few days in a state of graceful ephemeral euphoria.
Exuvia is a mixed media installation by Alessandro Capozzo and Katja Noppes. It consists in a semitransparent synthetic material mould of a desktop computer (connected to its peripherals) and an LCD display with an epoxidic resin layer mounted on. A dragonfly wings representation has been imprinted into the resin by several analogue processes. A semi generative software is visualized on the prepared LCD display: a set of attractors “drive” an agents flow through wings lines of force. Interaction between an analogue medium and a digital one let some properties of these two elements making a synthesis, anyway it goes over mere software objectification and materials dynamization: the installation focus is suggesting a narrative flow starting from a metamorphosis - not represented but referred by empty chrysalis (exuvia) as the printed memory of an absent object - till the spreading wings climax: vital, delicate and ephemeral as software could be.
code.specific (beta) is an installation based on a former web based software (alpha version).
code.specific is a tautology: a software analyzing and representing itself (its code) as a synthetic architectonic structure.
The physical aspect of the work consists in a small pillar coated with a surface of silicon rubber. The material has been shaped with a wooden formwork using a method similar to the concrete pouring process. Over the parallelepiped an LCD display, visualizing software output, has been mounted on.
Audience could interact with the software by two infrared ranger sensors mounted on two small iron structures. The system allows different kind of interaction: rotating the visualization on two axis, hacking the orthogonal aspect and displaying the software code.
This installation has been conceived as the second stage of a software objectification process.
"HERZ, IL CATALOGO E' QUESTO"
"Herz, il catalogo è questo" is a mixed media installation organized in a three modules rhythm: The first one introduces a heart cast made in traditional plaster, with the famous lyric by Da Ponte - Mozart written on. It continues with 13 heart casts, made of silicon rubber with talcum powder, installed as a city floor plan. The third part is a another heart cast made of silicon rubber placed next to a monitor, a messy electronic circuit is openly installed on it.
The system is driven by a microcontroller connected to an ultrasonic ranger sensor and a servomotor, a surveillance b/w camera (with a infrared lighting system built on) is set to take the heart inside view, the servo makes the camera moving with an heartbeat-like rhythm.
When audience moves nearby the installation the system detects that physical presence and make the servo increasing or decreasing the beat.
The installation perceives our presence and returns, as a moving picture, the vestiges of a presence: do hearts surfaces keep memories?
Discerning subject in Time / Space
Notions of perception and time are considered central to all art, where traditionally the visual arts have been understood as spatial and music as a temporal. Audiovisual New Media Art proves this division to be problematic. It permeates the division of perception and allows us to build our perception anew. In this new setting the subject becomes a mechanism to articulate time and space entwined. Although perception is always subjective, here the awareness comes forth as technologically mediated, ”coloured by technological lenses”.
A spectator looking at an artwork becomes simultaneously exposed to it. Within the New Media this exposure may deepen into immersion, as the audio-visual scene also surrounds the spectator with moving sounds and images. Through this the mechanism of perception is brought to a new level, where the attention of the spectator becomes enhanced, exceeding the natural perception.
Being located on the converge between Art and Science, New Media Art is privileged to map out the myriad of possibilities for points of concurrence. This convergence also benefits both of these worlds as the Artists of New Media constantly employ and develop new tools and philosophies in order to realize as well as convey the unforeseen, and as such accelerate the fine-tuning of technological development together with the experience of the spectator within this Art of the present.
New Media Art may cause you to think different!
Within this present Festival the majority of the artworks are either fully digitally modelled or the audiovisual material has been treated in a way that would have not been possible without the digital means. In order to bring forth a more complete spectrum of the happenings of the current New Media, Cartes Flux3 also includes some more traditional film or video works, executed within the last few years, where the attention is directed more towards the experiments of the narrative form than experimenting with the new technologies. This year we also decided to include the angle of participatory New Media where the interaction with the artwork becomes further enhanced.
